Comprehensive, compassionate writing and publishing support for academics and nonfiction writers

Excellent writing is the vehicle through which great work is realized.
However good the research, it’s the writing that shares it with the world. Excellent writing
gets you noticed,
gets you published, and
gets you tenure.
In an ideal world, written excellence and academic rigor would go hand-in-hand.
But that’s a huge (impossible) ask, especially on limited temporal, financial, and emotional resources.
Good writing’s important, and it’s hard.
The good news is that you don’t have to do it all alone.
I provide editorial support designed for nonfiction writers, academics, and memoirists, helping you express yourself with clarity and precision, without the anxiety or the headache.
Your work deserves to live as its best self, and you deserve to live your best life.

A good draft gets what you need to say down on paper.
A good editor helps you take that draft from good to great.
Let me take care of the details.
Your job is to write. Mine is to make your writing shine.
Creating something out of nothing is HUGE – it takes a huge amount of creative energy, stamina, time management, and executive function.
Nonfiction writing is still creative work; whether you’re writing an academic paper, a grant proposal, or a professional monograph, you’re still participating in creation. And that’s hard work.
Creation cannot thrive under stress, pressure, and anxiety.
But that’s why I’m here. I’m here to help you work less hard, for better results and quality of life.

Highly recommended!
Sophia helped me with an article intended to be published as a book chapter, which was my first time writing on the theme of media ecology. She’s very professional, prompt, and offers great advice. After her edits, I felt my article had improved. I will definitely ask Sophia again for future work. Highly recommended!

I believe deeply that scholar is a state of being, not a title, and am a fierce advocate for the creative potential (necessity?) of excellent research-based and nonfiction writing. My clients find joy in toeing the line between science and art, the investigative and the creative, in deeply human topics rooted in time, space, and culture. I am a particularly passionate advocate for scholars in decolonial and/or feminist disciplines.
I earned my PhD from the University of Chicago in Japanese literary history, media, and transcultural fandom.
As a writing professional, I have worked with undergraduates, graduate students, and professional writers on academic documents, grad school applications, job applications, grants, manuscripts, book proposals, and queries. As a professional coach and teacher I’ve worked in academic and university administrative settings, junior and collegiate sports, and with a wide variety of students, clients, and athletes from pre-K through adulthood.

I price by the word or by flat-rate fee. You will know the full cost and scope of the project before the work is started: so no surprises, ever!
Yes! I realize how expensive good editorial services are, and how inaccessible they can be, especially for students. If you are in need of pricing assistance, please ask.
Yes!
I work at a rate of approximately 10,000 words per week. If your project is under 10,000 words you will have it back within 5-7 business days. I will give you an exact return date before I start work on the project.
All developmental edit clients receive two complementary 50-minute meetings, if desired (though not required). Otherwise, I am open to discussing coaching with clients who would like more interactive, long-term feedback.
Yes! I am open to working with select fiction authors. Creative work isn’t static across genres. If you write fiction and think we’d be a good fit, get in touch. I’d love to hear from you.
